THE V.C.C.C. STRAWBERRY TEA

The Strawberry Tea was held at the home of John & Yvette Decker on Saturday June 24th, 2006.   The diving tour to the Decker's started at Ricky'sRestaurant in Walnut Grove.  The tour arrived about 2:00 PM.  Al Gejdos broke a clucth rod on his 1939 Packard and Earl Tucker had a gas problem with his 1930 Pierce Arrow.  The car problems were solved and both arrived in time for tea.  It was a gorgeous day and the yard was beautiful with baskets hanging around the porch and the garage.  This year the food was set up in the garage where it was cool.  Everything was going along fine until the whipped cream did not want to whip. So, out to Dairy Queen for some soft ice cream.  ron Morris stayed with the whipping cream and by the time the ice cream arrived we had both ice cream and whipped cream.  Way to go, Ron Morris!  What a guy.  The girls also just kept on whipping that cream.  Way to go, girls!

the ladies were dressed in their fine summer outfits and the men looked great in their out of the garage clothing.  Astro the parrot was doing a good job of entertaining everyone (only Astro can).  Astro is a blue and yellow Macaw that sits out in the tree and demands attention and gets lots of it.

Victor and Brenda Bourne had their 1921 Model T speedster out for the first time.  They had a few minor adjustments to make but arrived safe and sound at the tea.  The back yard was filled with beautiful cars.  It was another great car show for the neighbours to enjoy.

Little tidbits I heard while cruising the yard ... Toddles Easton was wearing a hat that was handed down from her mother - that makes it very special.  John and Lynn Schwarz are going on a great 34 day cruise.  Johanna and Len Scholes have been having a great time travelling around in their motorhome.  alice Dalziel was busy taking pictures of everyone.  It was so nice to see Patti Macdonald arrive for the afternoon.  She is getting around very well on her crutches after having hip surgery.

After enjoying the great strawberries, shortcake, whipping cream and ice cream along with tea and coffee, there were some very nice door prizes given out. Now it was time to get into the old car and head for home.

Thanks once again go to John & Yvette, Trudy Dunn, and all the people who helped make this such an enjoyable afternoon.

V.C.C.C. VANCOUVER CHAPTER AWARDS BANQUET

MARCH 11, 2006.

The Vancouver Chapter of the V.C.C.C. held The Annual Awards banquet at the Coquitlam Inn on North Road. There were 75 people in attendance. The table centers were delightful.  They were arrangements of sparkling flowers surrounding  a large wine glass holding a candle.  The person with the birthday closest to July 29 took the centerpiece home.

We started off with happy hour and socializing with fellow club members. We had a moments silence to honor the members we have lost this last year. Then it was time for dinner. But just a minute, what's that  sound coming from the hall. I think its bagpipes. Sure enough it was Dave Wilson with his bagpipes.  He was given the honor of choosing  in which  order we would go for dinner. The strangest thing happened, Dave's table was number one. He said he would take bribes but not Monopoly or Canadian Tire money. He piped his way around the room while choosing the next table.  Dinner was delicious and included numerous luscious deserts. There was a bottle of red wine and one of white on each table. After dinner Bill & Peter Trant entertained us with some with jokes and stories as only those two brothers can do. Thanks for making us laugh about getting older Bill. Next it was time to give out the awards. There will be a separate article regarding the awards.

After the awards we danced to the music of Peter Morris. His music just makes you want to get up there and dance. We were all having a good time when at 10:30 the fire alarm rang.  Everyone  stood around for a few minutes then decided it would be a good idea to leave. So we gathered up our trophies and coats and went outside.  By this time it was 10:45 so most of us went on home.  About a dozen or so people went back in but things wrapped up about 11:00. The evening was cut a little short but it was great while it lasted. Thanks to Trudy & Fred  Dunn for once again arranging a very enjoyable evening. Also thanks to Patti Macdonald for her help.  Another memorable evening for the Vancouver Chapter of the Vintage Car Club of Canada.

THE ANNUAL ALLAN BAKER RUN

MARCH 19, 2006

We met at Ricky's Restaurant at 10:00 A.M.  Some went for breakfast and some met in the parking lot.  It was a gorgeous sunny day, perfect for the run. Allan, Nicole and their helpers Andrew and Marcus were there early to get us all registered and ready to go.  To-day  we were going on a scavenger hunt.  After registering and receiving our instructions we all moaned and groaned at the items we had to find. We were going to White Rock to find all our treasures. There  were two different hunts.  One was to go and find all the items on the list and the other one was to take pictures with your digital camera.  We chose to find all the items on the list  One was to buy one grape and have the register receipt to go with it.  That was my job.  I went into the market and put one grape in a bag and took it to the check out.  The clerk got a big kick out of that.  It cost me four cents.  She decided to weigh it a second time to see if it came out the same and sure enough it did.  My  receipt told me I had saved two cents.  We had to find the usual things, a feather, a pop can, an American penny and such.  Some of the other items were not so easy.  How about a receipt for a taxi ride or a  receipt for your weight from the Deli.

The people with the digital cameras had fun too. One was to take a picture of someone standing in the water. They  also had to get a picture of a fireman in full gear.  Lynn and John Swartz were at the shopping center and there was a fire truck right there.  They went over to the firemen and told them what they needed so the firemen got dressed in their gear and just about that time they got a call to go back to the fire hall because there were people there wanting to take some pictures of firemen in their outfits.

We had 26 items to find in all. The winners were:

1st.  Bill and Diane Townsand        Bob & Marilynn Krause

2nd.  Mike & Lil Breed                  Bev & Dennis Ross

3rd    Jody & Les Shaw                 Earl & June Tucker

After we had collected all our items we met at the home of Estelle Goble, who is a friend of Nicole & Allan.  We enjoyed coffee & do-nuts while Nicole added up our scores.

Estelle invited us into her home to see her collection of miniature teams of horses pulling wagons or sleighs.  She has 22  houses she puts out in her yard in the summer and holds many events there such as picnics, jazz concerts, and seniors groups. She has a large property with a grassy area to park cars and loves to have people to come to her place. Her website is www.babasmemories.com.  This is an interesting website to look up. Members of The Pacific Model A Club and The Totem Model A&T Club were invited to join in the fun.

A huge thank you to Allan & Nicole Baker for their time and energy to organize this fun filled day.  Also a special thanks to Estelle Goble for her hospitality. I can't wait until next year to see what they have planned for us to do.  Approximately 25 cars turned out and there were 3 breakdowns.   What a wonderful day to be traveling around in our vintage cars. .                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    June Tucker

THE CAROUSEL

The August 2005 meeting was once again held at the ever-popular carousel at Burnaby Heritage Village . The cars were all parked on the grass beside the picnic tables. It was a perfect evening for a picnic and there were kids of all ages waiting to ride the Carousel.  What a special evening it was with children, parents and grandparents all enjoying the rides on the magnificent carousel.  Some of the very young children were brave enough to go on several rides and soon learned to run around and get in line again for another ride.

Last year Olivia & Nicola Cooper rode the carousel 17 times and were out to break that record.  They had twenty rides this year and their friend Naomi Harrison had nearly as many.  Way to go girls! The operators encouraged them to go for it and made sure everyone had a safe ride. They were pleasant, helpful fellows.

As I stood there watching, I wondered how the whole scene would have looked in 1913 with the ladies in their long dresses and big hats and the men dressed in their suits and ties.

I’m sure everyone is already looking forward to next year’s picnic meeting at the Carousel.

THE BRYLCREAM BROTHERS’
“ONCE IN A LIFETIME TOUR”

AUGUST 28/05

<>We met at Cheers Restaurant for a delicious brunch at 10:30 and a tour departing at 12:00 noon.  Upon our arrival at the parking lot we noticed what we thought were two new members but it turned out to be two OLD members wearing silly wigs – that would be the Brylcream Brothers, Al & Moe.  Brylcream wouldn’t even help that hair.  So away we went driving down Esplanade, passed Lonsdale Quay, under the Lions Gate Bridge and on to Park Royal.

We went past Ambleside Park , where they were having a family day Carnival, we did a little detour around that and on through Dunderave Village with its beautiful hanging baskets.  We drove along scenic Marine Drive to Fisherman’s Cove to visit a magnificent collection of MG cars belonging to Peter Welch.

There were 19 MG cars all in showroom condition on display.  Peter has been collecting for 35 years.  I liked the 1932 F-1 Magna with the rumble seat to hold one person. There was a car on the wall as well. Thank you to Peter for inviting us to enjoy your collection.

While we were waiting to leave we were entertained by the process of taking a sailboat out of the water and parking it on the blacktop.

Our next stop was at the West Vancouver Fire Hall #2 for lemonade & Crispy Cream do-nuts. This is a new fire hall that is not in use yet but there is a 1949 International KB6 unrestored pumper truck stored there. Scott Johnson, son of Joanne & Moe, is a fireman at this hall – thanks to Scott for opening up for us.  Thanks to Dave Waters and Brian  Novac for the cool, refreshing lemonade.

There is a bike park next to door the fire hall.  We watched the boys doing some fancy bike riding up and down the cement course.

We had a wonderful day driving along the water and scenic Marine Drive on fabulous day in Beautiful British Columbia.

Thanks to Moe Johnson & Al Scholes for making the arrangements for this “Once in a Lifetime Tour”.
