Leonard Zerr's 1955 DeSoto FireFlite
Back in 1999, Leonard Zerr saw an ad for an old DeSoto in a local paper in
Midway, B.C. He didn't really need a DeSoto, but he decided to go
take a look at it, "just in case ..."
The car had come from Washington State, where it had sat for years out
in a field. It had suffered from both weather and rodents and was
definitely a project car. Regardless, Leonard made a quick to
decision to buy it and returned the next weekend to pick it up.
(Years later, he confessed to having some "What have I done?" second
thoughts.)
Upon getting the car home, it was discovered that it was fairly solid
car, with a good front end and lots of good parts to work with.
However, the car would have to wait while other things remained higher
on the priority list.
After his retirement, Len began the restoration work on the
DeSoto. Every part of the car was dismantled, cleaned, tagged,
and rebuilt as necessary. The engine was rebuilt, new upholstery
installed, and bodywork, paint and chromework done. The project
took a little over a year.
Leonard has shown the car at numerous local events and regularly takes
home ribbons and trophies. The Desoto features a stock 291 hemi
V8 with 4 barrell carb and dual exhaust.
So, what about those second thoughts? Take a look at the "after" pictures and decide for yourself.
