The picture is of the 1939 Opel Super Six car that I drove in Germany in 1955 when I served with the RCAF. The picture was taken on base and you can see the housing quarters in the background.

It was basically a scaled down Oldsmobile. It had an inline OHV six cylinder engine similar to the Chevrolet stove bolt six, Dubonnet (Knee action) front suspension and a unique cable driven windshield wiper. The faster you drove the faster the wiper wiped.

We had a special deal on gasoline that only cost us 15 cents per gallon but very limited on how much we could get. The person I got the car from lived off base and since it only did about 4 miles per gallon he could not get enough fuel. Shortly after I got it I realized the muffler was plugged with carbon, I removed the muffler and re jetted the carburetor. Gas mileage increased to about 30 mpg.

When our first daughter was born my wife spent a month in the hospital with complications. With no insurance coverage the car had to go and was eventually replaced by a 1939 Steyr 200.
